EMËHNTËHTT-RÊ TRILOGIE

EMËHNTËHTT-RÊ TRILOGIE

13 May 2024

PERFORMED IN FULL FOR THE VERY FIRST TIME!

Concerts recorded live at Le Triton in November 2014

Initiated in 1973, its composition beholds its whole fulfillment after more than four decades. It is the testimony of an unwaveringly timeless inspiration, of which the expectant present asserts itself beyond history. Connecting wide and contrasted scenes, it sets its coherence within its very dynamics, playing with chiaroscuro , between choral splendor, operatic jubilation and hurricane of spirits beyond graves.

The different parts formerly scattered around are finally gathered in all their glory, finding their proper place in the grand scale of a now complete work, topped off with the bright blaze of a Grand Finale.

K.A – KÖHNTARKÖSZ – ËMËHNTËHTT-RÉ

The two-disc DVD set features THE CROSSROADS OF TIMES, 115 minutes of conversations with Christian Vander on composing each movement of the trilogy. Through a process of digging, expanding, anchoring and changing directions, his unique approach continues to propel Magma’s music forward.

ESKÄHL 2020 Bordeaux – Toulouse – Perpignan

13 May 2024

February 29, 2020: like wild beasts, we stormed the stage of Penmarc’h, the first concert of our tour.
Then came Nantes, Bordeaux, Toulouse, Perpignan and Saint-Étienne. Every night, the band, honed like a blade, leapt at the chance for battle!
In Besançon, our momentum was thrown off by an offbeat.
ESKAHL captures the concerts of this new MAGMA and its new line-up, more vibrant than ever! Magma is there, will always be there.

And nothing – no, nothing! – will stop us!

Christian Vander, December 2, 2020.
With the approval of Kömmandeuhr ZÏ.

MARQUEE CLUB 1974

13 May 2024

RECORDED LIVE A T THE MARQUEE CLUB, LONDON MARCH 17,1974

At the time of this concert, Köhntarkösz was still in its phase of elaboration, although the recording of the studio album began only 2 months later.

Large sequences were still not composed, others were borrowed from Köhntarkösz Anteria and were taken away, then used later in the K. A recording of 2004.

In a similar way, Theusz Hamtaahk did not have its final shape and its coda was cut soon after.

Bruxelles 1971

13 May 2024

Recorded on November 12th, 1971 at the Théatre 140, this double c.d. is an outstanding document, insofar as it is the only mark on c.d. of the live version of Magma of the time. With the musicians featuring on the album MAGMA 2, the band plays pieces taken from KOBAIA and from 1001° CENTIGRADES, the first two albums of the band. It also introduces, and that’s the most interesting characteristic of this recording, two pieces that were not fully completed at the time: SOWILOI, where Teddy Lasry shows how talented a flute-player he is and MEKANIK KOMMANDOH, played in public for the first time, in a version which is much more developed than the one recorded three months earlier on the compilation PUISSANCE 13+2.

KARTËHL

13 May 2024

2020/2021. More than 18 months without being able to perform. This space time, this forced break, was used to conceive a new album, a collective album such as we had not made for a long time. Following the creation of a new lineup in 2020, we once again solicited compositions from musicians. Christian Vander had never made the deliberate choice to be the only composer in Magma, however no musician among the dozens who participated in this adventure had proposed a new piece in decades. After “ZËSS”, which suggested a rather dark future, this bright and resolutely optimistic new album is the result of a collective work, an “Operation Kartëhl”

In addition to the 6 new pieces of music, the album includes 2 bonus tracks: Demos from Christian Vander’s personal collection, recorded at home

RETROSPEKTIW I – II – III + BONUS

12 May 2024

3 CD DIGIPACK, REMASTERED –

The first 10 years of Magma were celebrated with the music written by Christian Vander on three memorable evenings in June 1980 at the Olympia theatre in Paris.

This retrospective, reuniting most of the musicians who had performed in the group, was issued as two albums, Retrospektïẁ 1/2 (Double) and Retrospektïẁ 3 (Single). Issued first, Retrospektïẁ 3 comprises 3 titles, Retrovision, a long piece in the style of the album Attahk, in which the vocalists Stella Vander, Guy Khalifa and Maria Popkiewicz turn in a blazing performance over a driving rhythm section, followed by a supercharged version of Hhai, in which the trio Lockwood/Paganotti/Widemann works miracles. And finally La Dawotsin, where, in a more muted register, Christian Vander’s voice triumphs through its mastery and profound sensibility.

A bonus of more tan 15mn is included in this revised edition, the first studio recording from January 1980 of the song Retrovision, a pre-production mockup for a studio album. Ultimately Retrovision will never exist as a studio version.

Recorded, like Retrospektïẁ 3, during the soirees at Olympia in June 1980, Retrospektïẁ 1/2 is an absolutely fundamental album in which Theusz Hamtaahk, the first movement of the trilogy of the same name, is presented for the first time. The second and third movements, Wurdah Itah and Mekanik Destruktiw Komandoh, were of course already well known. Although played in concert since 1974, Christian Vander had waited for years before recording it for posterity as he wanted every note to be as beautiful, magical, essential and definitive as possible. It is with the same respect for his music that he releases here the most successful version of Mekanik Destruktiw Kommandoh, considered outstanding on account of two incredible improvisations from Bernard Paganotti and Didier Lockwood. Klaus Blasquiz, who did not perform on Retrospektïẁ 3, is the lead vocalist on this version.
There’s no doubt about it, Magma have left a legacy of music that defies any of the standard and convenient classifications of rock, operating instead in a realm of their own creation.

ZËSS, le jour du néant

11 May 2024

“Zëss”—the name itself is sharp as a blade, slender as a cut, sudden like a darting meteor, fast as it is acute. While the inspiration that permeates Zëss comes from time immemorial, a first draft emerged in 1977. After being gradually completed, the piece debuted in concert in the spring of 1979. It became a staple of Magma’s repertoire until it was set aside in 1983.

The music itself seems born out of the night in order to transfigure it. The first chords ring out in the dim dawn, then rise and cast their great shadows against the day. Already their orb suggests the oval shape of an ancient stadium set in the cosmic darkness. It is an immense celestial arena, an agora where all the voices of the universe resonate. Everyone has assembled for a last celebration, a gathering of the innumerable into a single point where everything comes together for the Day of Oblivion.

Zëss had long been plagued by its incompleteness and its recording was deferred for years. Four decades after its first draft, the work has finally been recorded in an orchestral version that gives it both its true dreamlike dimension and its transcending power. For Zëss is above all the visionary reflection of an immemorial dream haunting the most obscure part of our souls.

Zëss treads a line between a vital overflowing and the edges of the unlivable. It is an incandescent and heady oratorio where consciousness questions its other side in a measureless journey. Zëss indicates the ultimate reversal out of which bursts a beyond of music that only music can reach. Magma’s whole story condensed…

Slag Tanz

12 February 2016

Finally, music to set the cat among the pigeons… Magma are the dynamite that will explode the conventions of a music scene that is becoming rather too self-satisfied with its own beauty… Magma are unlike anything that has gone before…

So people were saying in 1970.

In 2015, nearly half a century later, this is truer than ever and the new mini-album Slag Tanz (pronounced schlag tanz ), this veritable symphony of jazz metal that has erupted from nowhere, radiates with all Magma s singular intensity!

Rïah Sahïltaahk

12 February 2016

The original version of RÏAH SAHÏLTAAHK was recorded in 1971 and appears on the album 1001°C. At the time, Christian Vander, the composer, wasn’t satisfied with the arrangement written by the band. This new version is completely revamped and adapted to the current ensemble and its lyrical voices, it is truer to the spirit of MAGMA’s music and its unique sound!

RÏAH SAHÏLTAAHK is the name of the Kobaïan who left after all the others, despite their disapproval. He thought he was better than anyone else and he was sure he could convert Kobaïa’s enemies to the Kobaïan spirit. But he failed and left alone for Kobaïa. On the symbolic stop-over planet, Malaria, he has to face the raging elements he thinks he can dominate. With his ship almost sunk, he ends up begging them… to no avail.

He will disappear. Drowned, swept away by the frenzied elements.

After the noise… silence.

Félicité Thösz

12 February 2016

Having emerged unscathed from STAR WARS, don’t just sit there waiting for the end of the world.Take a leap into the MAGMA Universe and grab their new studio album which is not to be missed under any circumstances: a trip which will lead you from Japan to the Urals via Central Asia with a detour to pay homage to Tamla Motown. Already aired in concert under the title Felicite Thosz and well-attended by legions of the band’s fans, the piece is dominated by the celestial voice of  Stella Vander and is a formidable mix of all the sonic colours which has made this cult band absolutely uncategorizable!

Ëmëhntëhtt-Rê

12 February 2016

At the doors of immortality, dreams the Great Servant of Ptah, God of creation drifting infinitely within his own mind, as he tries to awaken Him.

In its message, as in its genesis and its making, Ëmëhntëhtt-Ré is an intimate epic, an occult stride forward, a quest for the sublime. Initiated in 1975, its composition beholds its whole fulfillment after more than three decades. As much a seraphic liturgy as it is a telluric opera, Ëmëhntëhtt-Ré comes as the final closure to a second trilogy, following upon that of Theusz Hamtaahk, in Christian Vander’s corpus. This is a music reaching out from a time before man time. Born at the heart of nebulas, fed on mineral glow, and riding crypts capped with a cosmic vault. Bruno Heuzé Translation : Mary-Noelle Dana

Double CD – AVAILABLE IN FRANCE ONLY ON SEVENTH RECORDS MAIL ORDER PAGE

This album, which is only released in Japan and which will not be released in any other version, documents two different shows from their 2005 Japanese tour. The first disc is the complete Kontarkosz Anteria (K.A.) which is by the long lived and fantastic lineup of Magma that existed during the 00s (Christian Vander, Stella Vander, James Mac Gaw, Emmanuel Borghi, Frederic D’Oelsnitz, Philippe Bussonnet, Isabelle Feuillebois, Antoine Paganotti, Himiko Paganotti) and has since broken up with a mostly new line-up taking their place. A great piece and a great performance. The second disc is potentially even more interesting, as it presents Les Voix de Magma performing Theusz Hamtaahk, Wurdah Itah and M.D.K

K.A Kohntarkosz Anteria

12 February 2016

So. After 20 years of evading the point Christian Vander has finally deigned to the return to the masterwork style which brought us all to his door in the first place. With our tongues hanging out. Of all the many noble attempts of the prog rockers to create a grand compositional style which blended elements from classical music with rock, none, in my view, ever reached the intensity, complexity and raw savage excitement of the great Magma masterworks such as M.D.K, Kohntarkosz, Theusz Hamtaahk, etc…
Now it’s one thing to rest on your laurels and quite another to come back after such a great amount of time and to try and completely re-capture the original essence of your art. So many come backs have turned into let-downs ; and thus it is with some trepidation that I approached listening to K.A. I had seen many of the great Magma line-ups of the seventies performing these classics live. So the other question in my mind was : could the present band do it ?
All of you out there reading this will be delirious to know that it is almost as if time stood still. Of course K.A itself was composed 30 years ago and is the missing link between MDK and Kohntarkosz but that is hardly the point. K.A is the real thing. The hypnotic tension, the explosive climaxes, the fantastic pyrotechnic drumming, the massive and intricate vocal arrangements, the gut-wrenching bass lines and the classical pomposity fused with almost jungle-strength R n& B – all the hallmarks of Christian Vander’s special genius are found here intact.
I have nothing further to say except that we got lucky. Buy it.

Kompila

12 February 2016

Since November 1996 and the return of MAGMA to the stage there have been a high proportion of sell-out concerts; usually the audience included many teenagers who were amazed to discover this music, the existence of which they had never suspected. KOMPILA was released at the end of 1997 to help them discover the splendours of the Kobaian repertoire. The 22 extracts featured on this album cover MAGMA’s journey from KOBAIA (1970) through to HHAI/LIVE, which was released five years later. The masterworks which are the basis of the group’s legend are all visited: KOBAIA, STOAH, RIAH SAHILTAAHK, THEUSZ HAMTAAHK, WURDAH ITAH, MEKANIK DESTRUKTIW KOMMANDOH, KOHNTARKOSZ and HHAI. Carefully selected, these extracts provide an easy introduction to MAGMA and show the perfect internal coherence of Christian VANDER’s musical output. At a promotional price, this is CD is too good to miss.

Mythes et Légendes

12 February 2016

An introduction to the universe according to MAGMA, MYTHES ET LEGENDES highlights the themes composed by Christian VANDER at the beginning of the 1970s. Extracts are found here from KOBAIA, 1001 CENTIGRADES and the three movements of the trilogy THEUSZ HAMTAAHK, including, for the first time, KLAUS KOHMBALAD, the long version of the coda of RIAH SAHILTAAHK. Nicely blended into the music, the speaking voices of Christian and Stella VANDER and Guy KHALIFA link the different titles to give us the keys which enable us to go deeper into this totally original music. Their presence breathes a life and warmth into the record which is diametrically opposed to the insipid succession of disconnected titles so often heard on compilation albums.

Merci

12 February 2016

Released in 1985 and dedicated to John COLTRANE, MERCI is the last studio album by MAGMA to be released before Christian VANDER dedicated himself to his new group, OFFERING. Recorded between June 1982 and October 1984 at Studio Davout, with the help of a galaxy of musician friends, MERCI perfectly demonstrates the seamless transition from the electric music of MAGMA to the acoustic serenity of OFFERING. The album is, in effect, divided into two sections. The four opening titles present the MAGMA rhythm’n blues of the early 1980s, a cool, soul-wrapped unit full of melodic richness, and embellished with fabulous brass and vocal arrangements. The final two pieces by contrast are in a stripped-down, purified style which declares what the quest of OFFERING will be to touch the human being in the depths of his soul via a music which has been reduced to its essentials.

Attahk

12 February 2016

After an opening cycle of 7 years marked by magnificent albums and memorable concerts, Christian VANDER tired of having the feeling that he was only playing for a elitist clique of insiders, in effect locking him into a sort of musical ghetto. Thus ATTAHK, recorded at the end of 1977, sees the beginning of an attempt to win a wider audience by taking MAGMA in a new direction. Consisting of seven short titles, ATTAHK, by comparison with the earlier discs, offers a simplified music which is much more accessible. This doubting of the form does not however change in any way the basis of VANDER ‘s musical concept, nor does it lose even in the slightest degree its power of fascination. Suited as much to the body as the soul, the music radiates a brutal physical energy comparable to rock, and shocks the listener as greatly as KOBAIA (1970). In ATTAHK, VANDER also reveals for the first time his immense vocal ability and succeeds in the tour de force of making his music more open without betraying the spirit of MAGMA for even a moment.

Inédits

12 February 2016

Released in 1977, INEDITS features 6 titles regularly played in concert but never recorded in the studio by any of the different MAGMA line-ups which existed between June 1972 and January 1975. Mostly recorded with whatever equipment was to hand, either in concert or at rehearsals, these recordings nevertheless have a good sound and are an essential part of the history of the band. Although the musical interest is constant throughout the album, the highlights nevertheless are the two opening titles, which bring the incredible bass playing of Jannik TOP to the fore.

Üdü Ẁüdü

12 February 2016

UDU WUDU (1976) saw the return of Jannick TOP to the heart of MAGMA, a reunion desired passionately by Christian VANDER, who asked Jannick to collaborate as co-leader in the creation of this record. The new MAGMA line-up not being final at the time the recording took place, the basics of the work were laid down by VANDER and TOP, who besides their usual instruments brilliantly integrated the keyboard parts into the tracks. The musical voyage into which they draw us is performed in two sections, the first containing short pieces with diverse atmospheres and styles, which use the brass and flutes of the early albums, and the the second comprising the 18 minute composition by Jannick TOP, DE FUTURA. Completely dfferent in apearance, the two sections are in fact complementary, the first being designed to put the listener in the most receptive state of mind before the arrival of the music cataclysm represented by DE FUTURA. A monumental work, this piece generates, by means of the titanic force of the bass and drums, an incredible power which gives it the unquestionable status of a mythic work.

Magma Live

12 February 2016

After the departure in autumn of 1974 of Jannick TOP and most of the other members of the band, MAGMA rose phoenix-like from the ashes with a new, hot, line-up which saw the musical opportunity lying before it. After long rehearsals Christian VANDER realised that he had yet another exceptional groupand the decision was taken to record the first MAGMA live album. The recording, made in June 1975 at the Taverne de l’Olympia, perfectly demonstrates the incredible impact made by MAGMA. Absolutely dedicated to the music of Christian VANDER, who by that time had reached the summit of his art, the band plays as if it were one man and sweeps all before it in its triumphant passage. Whether it was a new arrangement of any of the old pieces (KOHNTARK, KOBAIA, MEKANIK) or a previously-unheard piece (HHAI, LIHNS), the sound of MAGMA has never been heard more powerfully as on this incredible recording. Although it remains difficult to point to any one performance as being outstanding, it would nevertheless be difficult not to react to the mind-blowing performance by Didier Lockwood, whose violin playing contributes so greatly to the profound originality of this magnificent double-album.

Köhntarkösz

12 February 2016

Not being a man who tended to sit on his laurels Christian VANDER decided, with KOHNTARKOSZ, recorded in 1974, to set off in a completely new musical direction, putting anyone who expected a simple encore to MEKANIK DESTRUKTIW KOMMANDOH straight onto the back foot.
Fortified by the success of the last album, the majority of musicians would be delighted to lay back into their own style and play safe. Not so for VANDER, who was driven to surpass himself, to bring to birth a new masterwork. Considered against the other albums, KOHNTARKOSZ (the composition) used a profoundly original approach
to lift the rhythmic pulse and float it above the music, so that instead of marking time it continually sits above the metre. The savage virtuoso drumming of the earlier albums is here replaced by a more restrained approach, in which every stick hit seems to weigh twenty tons by contrast. The result is a mysterious incandescent atmosphere which holds the listener in breathless thrall right up to the explosive finale.
If, when compared with M.D.K., the sound of the band has changed significantly, with the monster bass foundation laid down by Jannick TOP and the other-worldly keyboard playing come to the fore at the expense of the vocal work, the spirit of MAGMA nevertheless remains intact. This spirit is also found in ORK ALARM, TOP’s first composition for MAGMA, and the final piece, COLTRANE SUNDIA, a vibrant and heartfelt tribute to John COLTRANE, the inspiration for all this marvellous music.

Ẁurdah Ïtah

12 February 2016

The soundtrack for Yvan LAGRANGE’s film TRISTAN Y ISEULT, WURDAH ITAH was recorded in April 1974, just one month before the sessions which produced KOHNTARKOSZ. It forms the second movement of THEUSZ HAMTAAHK, an epic work in three movements of which MEKANIK DESTRUKTIW KOMMANDOH, recorded a year earlier by MAGMA, forms the final part. Performed by the core players in MAGMA at that time – Christian VANDER (piano, drums, vocals), Jannick TOP (bass), Klaus BLASQUIZ (vocals, percussion) and Stella VANDER (vocals) – WURDAH ITAH is music stripped down to its bare essence. Although a total contrast to the splendour and orchestral power of M.D.K., it nevertheless has just as great rhythmic power and surprising vocal lyricism, unquestionably marked by the claws of MAGMA.

Mekanïk Destruktïw Kommandöh

12 February 2016

MEKANIK DESTRUKTIW KOMMANDOH is considered by many to be the ultimate MAGMA masterwork. Recorded in 1973 at the Manor Studios in Oxford by a completely new line-up, the sole sur../VIVOrs from the previous incarnation of MAGMA were Klaus BLASQUIZ and, of course, Christian VANDER himself. A long piece in 7 movements, M.D.K. had an extended gestation period before reaching its final, definitive form. The previous band had recorded a short version – dominated by the brass section – which was released on a 45 rpm single. The progression from this simple version to what is heard on the album is astounding. The entire credit for this achievement is down to Christian VANDER, who by this time had taken the artistic destiny of MAGMA fully into his own hands. Although the performance of the band was an order of magnitude more powerful than before – notably with the arrival of Jannick Top on bass, whose playing complemented Christian VANDER’s music so perfectly – then perhaps the most striking characteristic of M.D.K. was the epic sound produced by the vocal team. Driven by a colossal, giant-stepping rhythm section and dynamically reinforced by a female backing group – with Stella VANDER appearing for the first time – the voices of Klaus and Christian come to haunt our souls through these magnificent songs which seem to emerge from our collective memory, conferring MAGMA’s music with a timeless and universal character.

1001° Centigrades

12 February 2016

MAGMA returned to the studio in 1971 to record its second album, 1001° CENTIGRADE. By this time the guitarist Claude Engel had quit the group and the brass section was re-invigorated by the arrival of Jeff SEFFER on sax and Louis TOESCA on trumpet. All the factors contributing to the originality and grandeur of KOBAIA remained in place, reaching a more profound form in this second opus. If the two pieces composed by Teddy LASRY and Francois CAHEN allowed a more jazz-oriented tendency to filter through, it is in RIAH SAHILTAAHK where we hear the ideas presented on the first album developed with the greatest power. At over 20 minutes, this Christian VANDER composition is astounding, as much by its richness and incredible variety of themes as by the perfectly-disciplined rhythmic force; moreover, it showcases the fullness and diversity of the brass section, although its role became progressively less important as time went on. RIAH SAHILTAAHK anticipates the forthcoming masterpieces such as MEKANIK, KOHNTARKOSZ and THEUSZ HAMTAAHK.

Kobaïa

12 February 2016

At the end of the 1960s – a time when the French seemed to be willing tolerate the total domination of their music by Anglo-Saxon influences – Christian VANDER founded MAGMA. In doing so he declared his intention to create a different type of music, with an essentially European identity. The first, double, album by MAGMA, KOBAIA (1970) realises this objective and indeed, surpasses all expectations. A cry of revolt and hatred against this Earth – which suffocates humanity and yet absolutely governs its activity – the music of MAGMA synthesises a wide range of influences

STRAVINSKY, BARTOK, COLTRANE, BACH, jazz, rock, rhythm and blues…. and the result is a totally new musical language, disconcerting at first hearing, and yet which soon reveals an unsuspected magnificence. Although the line-up is classic, the revolutionary character of this album results from the originality of the rhythm section, which is totally relentless, the tidal-wave brass section, used in a completely new way, and the extraordinary singing, using an invented language, which tells us that from here on out, nothing will be as it was before

Les Voix 1992

12 February 2016

The music of MAGMA interpreted in acoustic performance by the band members of OFFERING – this was the idea behind LES VOIX DE MAGMA (The Voices of Magma), presented on the 2nd August 1992 at the “Jazz in the Bay” Festival at Douarnenez. Subtly re-arranged for 9 voices, double bass and keyboards, the themes underlying the Kobaian Universe here take on a new dimension. Full of power, captivating and lyrical, the absence of electricity takes nothing away from a repertoire which retains all its splendour. A fantastic success, but which at bottom is nothing amazing to those who understand that singing has always been the point of departure for MAGMA’s music.

Bobino 1981

Recorded live in Paris in 1981 at BOBINO theatre where the band played for 3 weeks. Many of the numbers played here were never recorded in studio so far.

Bourges 1979

12 February 2016

This particular concert, recorded in Bourges in 1979, stands out as a moment of grace, partly due to its extreme tension and the risks taken collectively, which the audience still reminisces of to this day.

AKT 15 is the latest and long awaited document of the AKT series. While chosen for their rich and original musical content, rather than strictly technical qualities per se, these archives are a testament to the astounding talent of cult band Magma during its soon-to-be 40 years of career. This particular concert, recorded in Bourges in 1979, stands out as a moment of grace, partly due to its extreme tension and the risks taken collectively, which the audience still reminisces of to this day. And if all the musicians offer, as usual, their energy ever so in synch with their worldly reputation, AKT 15 holds a special place in the band’s history, documenting for the first time ever this particular period. All earthly fans and more recent amateurs will, without a doubt, take great pleasure in (re)discovering that exceptional performance.

korusz 1979

12 February 2016

Christian Vander is a remarkable musician. Apart from his work as a composer, pianist and singer, he is also one of the greatest drummers on the planet. We have asked him to choose his best solos from the 1970s, out of all those, we have recorded. The fabric of these solos has always developed out of the threads which have joined the years together : earth, air, fire… from all these element combined – out of which arises Song itself… Always in search of the “Ultimate Solo”, Christian never thought of releasing these recordings. After some intense pressure by the team at Seventh to reconsider this decision, he is now convinced that these recordings have worn well with time.

Not that WE ever doubted they would !

Opéra de Reims 1976

12 February 2016

After the official live concert of the Taverne de l’Olympia and the concert of the Théatre du Taur of Toulouse, here is, with this triple album recorded in the opera of Reims on March 2nd, 1976, a new opportunity to listen with delight to what probably was Magma’s most prestigious formation. Above all, this concert, which features, like the two that came before, a band of unequalled unity and power, makes up a document of prime importance as far as its content is concerned. Three major pieces show it. SONS ET CHORUS DE BATTERIE (Drums sounds and chorus) first, the only drum chorus by Christian Vander in Magma ever recorded on CD; THEUSZ HAMTAAHK then, in a version of the time which announces the one that would be released in 1980 on the album RETROSPEKTIV 1&2, and finally DE FUTURA, a piece which was still being worked on at the time, with Paganotti on bass, only a few months before it was recorded by its talented creator Jannick Top.

Théâtre du Taur 1975

12 February 2016

The concert of 24th September 1975 at the Theatre du Taur in Toulouse was part of the autumn promotion tour which followed the recording of HHAI/LIVE at the Taverne de l’Olympia three months earlier. Freed from the constraints of the studio, the group, which between times had replaced Jean-Pol ASSELINE with Patrick GAUTHIER on keyboards, was exceptionally tight in this show. The result was a performance of incredible power in which each musician was totally unconstrained and all seemed to succeed in everything they did. The solos of Didier LOCKWOOD and Bernard PAGANOTTI on the long version of MEKANIK DESTRUKTIW KOMMANDOH are absolutely staggering; and even Gabriel FEDEROW, normally discreetly in the background, pleases us, in KOBAIA, with a long and magnificent guitar solo.

LIVE IN BREMEN 1974

12 February 2016

Recorded by Radio Bremen, this double-CD document of a high sonic quality contains a slightly shorter than usual version of MEKANÏK DESTRUKTÏẀ KOMMANDÖH, and represents with the remaining tracks SOWILOI, DRUM SOLO and THEUSZ HAMTAAHK an indispensable supplement to MAGMA’s other live albums.

Londres BBC 1974

12 February 2016

This recording carried out on the 14 of March 1974 in the London BBC studios, is a marvellous and unhoped-for gift which has been given.to us. It is a miracle to be able to listen, with excellent sound quality, to ” THEUSZ HAMTAAHK ” and ” KOHNTARKOSZ “, those magmaian masterpieces, in unique versions, played by the group which was at the origin of their creation. If the successive versions played by the MAGMA of 75-76 are most familiar for us, these which are offered to us here, are of major interest on several levels: first of all, their structure, which at that time was not yet finalised, and comprised sequences which were either arranged thereafter in a different way, or removed; and their execution, with a “THEUSZ HAMTAAHK ” whose slowness of tempo is equalled only by the violence contained therein, and a ” KOHNTARKOSZ” where the magic of the dual keyboards brings to this piece an alternative which is as spellbounding as that generated at the Tavern of Olympia the following year by the divine flights of Didier LOCKWOOD’s violin. Lastly, these two pieces allow us to appreciate, for the first time under ” live “conditions , a band, welded around the tandem of Christian VANDER/Jannik TOP, whose exceptional value has perhaps been a little forgotten in the intervening years.

Mekanïk Kommandöh 1973

12 February 2016

MEKANIK DESTRUKTIW KOMMANDOH is considered by many to be the ultimate MAGMA masterwork. A live version recorded in Bordeaux, 2 month before starting the original studio version.

12 February 2016

After  the success of the DVDs EPOK 1-2-3-4, published in 2006 and 2007, the Triton again welcomed Magma in June 2011. This was for a  nine concerts cycle to complete the DVD series “Myths & Legends ” .

EPOK 5 not only includes pieces from 1971, 1977 and 1978   but also Félicité Thösz , the latest MAGMA release, heard here in a version prior to the recording of the album. There are, in addition, 20 minutes of unpublished music.

A dynamic and extremely musical edit enables the listener to enjoy the band at the height of its powers, showcasing the intensity of each composition and the technical prowess of the musicians. The exceptional sound quality was captured as usual by Francis Linon who knows, better than anyone, how to record the power and musicality of MAGMA.

Mythes & Légendes – Epok 4

The last in the « Myths & Legends » series of DVDs, EPOK 4 brings this brilliant retrospective cycle, covering 35 years of musical creativity, to an end.

The last in the « Myths & Legends » series of DVDs, EPOK 4 brings this brilliant retrospective cycle, covering 35 years of musical creativity, to an end. No special guest players of great renown on this DVD, but we do add 2 highly-motivated and skilled young horn players to give the band some extra muscle in flagship numbers such as Zess and Otis. These 4 weeks of sold-out concerts end with a stupendous finale which finds 16 musicians on stage at the Triton giving a mega performance of Kobaia, one which will live in our memories forever! Yet again, the evidence speaks for itself : « Yesterday, MAGMA’s music was already that of the future ; today it remains the music of tomorrow. Yet even tomorrow it will still be unsurpassed » S .Siclier, Le Monde nov. 2006

Following the epic, the third volume lays it out with Kohntarkosz, the 1973 masterpiece which was a decisive turning point in the development of the Vander odyssey.

DVD Epok 3, recorded May 26, 27 & 28 at Le Triton.
Following the epic, the third volume lays it out with Kohntarkosz, the 1973 masterpiece which was a decisive turning point in the development of the Vander odyssey.
The DVD takes us up to 1979, with extracts from the album Attahk, given masterful interpretations here by a line-up comprised of the present-day core members of the group and the third star guest, Benoit Widemann, who, as always, plays his Mini-Moog brilliantly.
Magma has never stopped innovating, or opening new tracks. Magma still is Magma, powerful and deep-seated, lyrical and orchestral, unique!

This second week was The Maximum Event, re-uniting the two great juggernauts Christian Vander and Jannick Top. Thus a complete new generation, too young to hear these mythical masters first time round, was able to get to know them

Recorded on the 21st May 2005. Remember that incredible month where MAGMA booked out this Paris club, changed its program each week, and brought in luminaries from its history to play with the band
again? This is it – part two.
This second week was The Maximum Event, re-uniting the two great juggernauts Christian Vander and Jannick Top. Thus a complete new generation, too young to hear these mythical masters first time round, was able to get to know them, to experience the magic they make, and to taste the pleasure they had in playing together again. If there is one DVD missing from your collection, this is it. Not to be missed under any circumstances.

May 2005 Magma took over Paris venue ‘The Triton’ for 4 weeks with an ambitious, over the top project – a retrospective of 35 years of Magma music showcasing some of the best known pieces from the years 1970 to the present.
Celebrity guests such as Klaus Blasquiz, Jannick Top or Benoit Widemann, not to mention many young talented musicians, gave their all to play this unique music with the passion and fervour that it demands.
These 4 sell out weeks were, without any shadow of doubt, a major success which more than paid back the enormous amount of effort needed to get these 8 hours of music into full focus.
This is the first of a series of 4 DVDs which capture these unforgettable moments for posterity, where the joy of playing this outstanding music is only equalled by the rapturous response of the audience.

THEUSZ HAMTAAHK Trilogy

12 February 2016

The ‘MUST HAVE’ MAGMA for the new Millennium!

If you were there you were one of the lucky ones – if not, this is the next best thing. With a big CD catalogue but very little video footage, this mega performance sets the record straight.
Maestro Christian Vander leads one of his finest bands through the entire 130 minutes of his classic magnum opus THEUSZ HAMTAAHK. Never before available in one complete rendition, here you have it. Moment by moment witness the gut-wrenching power and sheer dramatic beauty of this full-on-to-the-max performance. Feel it as the band and audience felt it and feel it AS NEVER BEFORE. Never to be repeated and NOT TO BE MISSED.
I know – because I was there!

Available in two versions, the DVD also includes ‘The Zeuhl Wortz K.
Hit Squad’ footage. This 30 minute documentary formed the prologue to the Trianon concerts. Twenty seven former members of the group participate in this moving tribute to Christian, the man and his music, and we also see amazing young Zeuhl cadet Fabien in action on the kit.

Bobino – Concert 1981

After a first decade which culminated in the Olympia Retrospective of June 1980, Magma took over Bobino for 3 weeks in may 1891 and thus commenced a new phase in its musical evolution.

After a first decade which culminated in the Olympia Retrospective of June 1980, Magma took over Bobino for 3 weeks in may 1891 and thus commenced a new phase in its musical evolution. Most of the pieces presented here have never been recorded in the studio, notably the electric version of ” Zess “, illuminated by the vocal prowess of Christian Vander and the furious madness of Jean-Luc Chevalier’s guitar playing. This alone justifies the purchase of this DVD which bursts with incredible energy.

Flöë Ëssi / Ëktah

12 February 2016

One 3 and one 6 minute song. The first is a little like Hatfield/Jazzrock, but more incandescent, the second is intense, somewhere between Tristan and Isolde and Retrovision. Recorded in 1998, but back to eighties strength.

At the very beginning of MAGMA, we were asked to compress in three or four minutes what we had used to express in twenty or forty minutes.
Well, here are a few attempts, sumed up through five pieces. Originally edited as singles in limited series and no longer available, these add to MAGMA’s new editions.
